Virgil's Special Edition

Bavarian Nutmeg Root Beer

"Winner NASFT 'Outstanding Beverage' Award"

"Microbrewed with 100% Natural Ingredients"

"Imported from Bavaria"

Original Beverage Corp., Los Angeles, California

1-800-997-3337

From the label:  "Originally brewed in the north of England, Virgil's is made with natural ingredients -- nutmeg, imported anise, and wintergreen.  The brewing process gives Virgil's a rich, creamy body and a taste so pure, you'll swear it's made in heaven."

Re-Review (8/8/04)

Medicinal nose.  Very complex, spicy and rooty.  Wintergreen aftertaste, with lots of spicy tones on the way there.  Carbonation a little strong, though Nancy thought it could actually use more carbonation.  Unlike our last round with Virgil's Special Edition, this bottle had carbonation.  "Very tasty," said guest reviewer Gerry, who continues, "Sweeter than most root beers, kind of smooth, kind of velvety.  Is it worth $5?  Probably not, but I'm not sure there is any soda worth $5."

Original Review (3/23/03)

Spicy nose.  Our bottle had lost its carbonation and was completely flat, so it suffered in the mouthfeel department.  Complex, very spicy, lots going on.  "Smooth, with nice spice," said Nancy.  "Nice warmth in its aftertaste -- very good, tasty, not too sweet."  We judged the fancy bottle a failure, particularly since (before we ever opened it) our brand new bottle had leaked when we laid it on its side on the shelf, leaving a nice root beer pool.  The $4.99/bottle price tag is also a disincentive.
