Root Beer

"Famous, Old Time"

"Absolutely Pure"

The Sayre Brewing Co., Sayre, Pennsylvania

(Actually brewed by Private Label Specialties, Ltd, Goffstown, New Hampshire  03045)

This is a vanity label soda, a fund-raiser for the Sayre Historical Society.  Thankfully, it is actually good root beer as well!  There are a couple of root beers we've tried that are like this, that are made by private label companies for specific institutions; others that come to mind are Scooter's and Anthony's Pizza Parlor II.

Review

Rooty nose.  Gentle carbonation, nicely smooth.  Sweet with a trace of rootiness through the middle.  Sweetness lingers into aftertaste, where it is joined by a hint of wintergreen, the wintergreen activity building in later sips.  Not a sophisticated root beer, but a satisfying one.

This brew was the subject of an informal root beer tasting at the office among my staff.  The three staffers averaged 6.66 overall, with two giving it an 8 and one giving it a 4.  Rebecca opined that it was "sweet, but not too sweet with a good root flavor."  Ilana, who doesn't like sweet drinks, wanted it spicier, "and a heck of a lot less sweet."  Mijin thought it was "very pleasant but could be a bit more carbonated.  It's weirdly carbonated -- all the bubbles stay on your tongue."
