Review
Before the review, I want to note that this is not a true root beer, though because it has "root beer" in its title it was included in a collection of five other root beers I ordered from Rootbeerstore.com ("The Piscataqua"). Egg creams do not have eggs in them, and many -- Jeff's is an exception -- do not contain milk or cream, either. Jeff's contains both milk and cream, unusual in a soda product, to be sure (and making it one of the few sodas on the market with cholesterol!). As Egg Cream America says on its website, "we have essentially defined within the industry a new beverage category, Dairy Based Carbonated Beverages. Yesterday's egg cream is today's dairy based carbonated beverage and we consider ourselves the next link in the continuing saga of egg cream."
The review, then. A strong, chemical nose. Light carbonation, a medicinal, almost fruity taste with chalky milk overtones. Spicy in there, too, an odd combination that made me wonder just what was in this thing. A very odd taste, that got worse as the bottle progressed. Slight sting to the tongue, with a chalky, Milk of Magnesia aftertaste. The problems with this "root beer" -- weird taste and milkiness -- do not fit into my little matrix of seven categories below, except in over-all root beer experience, where I gave this a "3." I was happy the bottle was only 9.5 ounces, and then I gave up on even drinking that much and washed the last third down the drain.
