Hires
Root Beer
Since 1876
Review: Charles Hires is said by some to have invented root beer in the 1870s, but the blandification that comes with mass marketing has taken its toll over the intervening 125 years. "Boring" and "cloying" were the repeat reviews of this national brand in our 2001 Taste-Off, where it ranked 8th of 9 beers. Tasters were unimpressed with the "syrupy, sweet" taste which "masks its lack of rootiness." Sometimes sugar water is just, well, sugar water.
