Root Beer

Gene's Root Beer, 640 S. Scatterfield Road (State Route 109) (at 7th), Anderson, Indiana  46012  •  765-642-5768

This is a wonderful drive-in with car-hop service.  There are long waits for service -- at least on a Sunday night in late March, when I was there, when all of the many parking spots were taken.  It is deservedly popular, and the root beer is well worth the wait (the fish sandwich was unexceptional, but that's not why I was there).

Review

A soapy nose made me think maybe the glass had not been rinsed out after washing; this was the only thing I did not like about this amazing root beer.  It is dark and thick, check out the photo -- you can't even see light through it.  A maple syrupy lead, slight burnt sugar taste.  Very similar to Mug 'N Bun, a little more wintergreen stirring in aftertaste.  Rich, full bodied, delightfully sweet.  A lovely, smooth smooth brew.  Didnt get much rootiness on the first time around.

I ended up buying a half-gallon to go, which is served in plastic container like a milk jug, which fueled most of my drive to Fort Wayne.  I detected no soapy smell to this batch, which confirmed my feeling about my first mug.  The next morning, I had some of it warm, and it is a remarkable root beer.  Oooh.  A complex, rooty taste, which was masked by the cold, emerged in the warm brew.  A very subtle and pleasant rooty aftertaste.  I upgraded both rootiness and aftertaste after my morning's libation.  This is a truly exceptional brew.
