This is a root beer bottled by root beer afficionado and soda mogul John Montgomery, who now has five locations for his Old Town Root Beer Company throughout California. We stopped by the Old Town San Diego branch (2415 San Diego Avenue, San Diego, in Old Town), which has more than 150 types of sodas including a diverse array of root beers -- including Old Town on tap and in bottles. The recipe comes down from John's great-great-grandmother, and was found in a family bible. The business started after John and his family enjoyed the root beer they made from the recipe so much, they decided to bottle it. They now have five locations, which are well worth a trip. They make two varieties, the straight Old Town and the D-n-A Old Fashioned Root Beer, which I didn't like as much as this stuff.
At right is John behind the counter at the San Diego store, proffering a root beer float.
Review:
Honey, rooty nose. Tiny bubble wintergreen lead broadening into a full-bodied, satisfying brew. Honey finish and aftertaste, with a light wintergreen fizz at the end. A terrific root beer.
